Building a healthier workplace: boosting men’s health and wellbeing at work

Men’s health and wellbeing in the workplace is a topic that’s often overlooked, yet it’s essential for creating a thriving, inclusive, and productive team. With men often less likely to seek help for health concerns or discuss their struggles, fostering a supportive environment is more important than ever.

Here’s how HR teams and managers can take proactive steps to boost men’s health and wellbeing at work.

Encourage open conversations

Creating a culture where men feel safe to talk about their physical and mental health is key. Host regular wellbeing check-ins, create anonymous suggestion boxes, or run campaigns to normalise talking about issues such as stress, burnout, and mental health challenges. Remember: when employees see that wellbeing is a priority, they’re more likely to seek support.

Promote flexible working

Balancing work and personal life is vital for everyone’s health, including men. Encourage flexible hours, remote work options, or compressed workweeks to help men manage responsibilities outside of work – whether it’s family commitments, fitness routines, or time for relaxation.

Focus on physical health

Offer initiatives that encourage physical activity, such as discounted gym memberships, lunchtime walking groups, or standing desks. Even simple steps like encouraging regular movement breaks can have a positive impact on men’s physical health.

Address mental health head-on

Men’s mental health can often be stigmatised or overlooked. Providing resources like Employee Assistance Programmes (EAPs), signposting to external support (such as Mind or Samaritans), and training managers to spot signs of distress can make a real difference. Hosting workshops on stress management, resilience, and work-life balance can also empower men to take charge of their wellbeing.

Celebrate Men’s Health Week

Each June, Men’s Health Week shines a spotlight on men’s wellbeing. Use this as an opportunity to run themed activities, share helpful resources, and start conversations around health and self-care. It’s a great chance to show your commitment and bring the topic to the forefront.

Review and update policies

Ensure your HR policies are inclusive and proactive about men’s health. Policies around stress, workload management, and mental health support should explicitly encourage men (and all staff!) to prioritise their wellbeing.

Men’s health and wellbeing in the workplace isn’t just about reducing sick days – it’s about creating a culture where everyone feels supported and valued. By fostering open dialogue, promoting healthy habits, and challenging the stigma around men’s health, you’ll build a healthier, happier, and more engaged workforce.
